Alberta Playwrights’ Network’s YOUth Riot – now in its fifth year – is a FREE opportunity for Calgary’s Queer youth to raise their voice and share their stories!

Over the course of 10 weeks, Alberta Playwrights’ Network and guest artists will facilitate a creative writing program for Queer youth, helping them learn skills, meet other queer youth, create, imagine, inspire. This is YOUth Riot.

YOUth Riot finishes with a public festival of short pieces created by the participants by and staged by professional actors and directors from the theatre community.

●      14 - 21 year olds across Calgary are encouraged to apply for this free 10-week program where you will learn tools and skills from professionals in the Calgary arts community to help develop your own story and voice.

Musical Theatre Creation with Bob Martin & Lisa Lambert

Theatre AlbertaAlberta Playwrights’ Network, and Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity are pleased to offer this intensive workshop on new musical theatre creation as part of the Workshops by Request: Rocky Mountain Series. Instructors Bob Martin and Lisa Lambert are the creators of the award-winning musical The Drowsy Chaperone. Participants in this workshop will learn methods and practice skills for developing original musicals. Topics will include the relationship between book writer and lyricist, the importance of identifying and embracing a personal approach, and original work vs. adaptations (and the challenges each pose). This workshop is for experienced playwrights and theatre creators with a strong interest in musical theatre creation. Individual artists, as well as those working as part of a writing team, are welcome to apply. Songwriting experience is an asset but not a requirement. Participants are asked to bring work-in-progress material to discuss in the class and to present to the instructors for feedback. Material may include written work, concepts, or ideas for a new musicals.

Tuition: $375

Accommodation: Private Room $65/night - Shared Room $35/night

Meals: $41/person/day

Total: ranges from $575 to $800 depending on arrival date and choice of accommodation. These prices are approximate, and are subject to change. An additional fee of $100 will be charged to participants residing outside of Alberta.
